UTILITIES

Who to call to turn everything on

Utilities are the tenant’s responsibility unless your lease says otherwise. Set them up in your name before your move-in date so you are not arriving to a home with no power or water.

Electric and natural gas

BGE serves most of Harford County for electric and, where lines exist, natural gas. Part of the county is served by Delmarva Power for electric. Your lease or move-in sheet names the utility for your home. If you smell gas, leave the home and call 911 first.

Water and sewer

Depends on where the home sits.
County system: Harford County Water and Sewer Billing, 410-638-3311.
Bel Air: Maryland American Water, 1-866-641-2131, 24 hours for emergencies.
Aberdeen: billed by the city. City Hall (410) 272-1600.
Havre de Grace: billed by the city. City Hall 410-939-1800.
Some homes are on a private well and septic system, in which case there is no water bill.

Trash and recycling

Harford County does not collect trash. Private haulers licensed by the county do, and your trash hauler also takes your recycling. Your lease says whether service is included or set up by you. County-licensed residential haulers: Bartenfelder Sanitation 410-457-5550, Casella 410-457-0404, Harford County Trash Services 443-841-6253.

Before you move in

Common questions

The county itself does not license long-term rentals. Havre de Grace requires registration with the city. Bel Air licenses short-term rentals only. Maryland lead paint registration applies to pre-1978 homes everywhere, and you are entitled to a copy of the lead certificate for your unit.

You do, unless your lease says a utility is included. Set them up in your name before your move-in date. In Harford County that may include a private trash hauler.

Yes, at every home we manage. Maryland law protects source of income, so a Housing Choice Voucher or other rental assistance is treated like any other income. Tell us about it on the pre-qualification form so we can plan the inspection and paperwork with your caseworker.

Use the maintenance request form. It takes about three minutes and you can add photos. For an urgent problem such as a major leak, no heat, no power or a sewage backup, call (240) 916-6008 and choose the emergency option, then send the form too. If anyone is in danger or you smell gas, leave the home and call 911 first.

Gross household income of at least 3 times the monthly rent. For a $900 rent that is $2,700 a month before taxes. The affordability calculator on the Renter Resources page does the math for you.
