LaVale sits just west of Cumberland along the old National Road, and it’s one of the most active rental markets in our home territory. It’s also unincorporated: LaVale has no town government of its own, so building codes, permits, and rental rules run through Allegany County rather than a separate municipal layer. The area grew up around the National Road as a retail and commuter corridor. Country Club Mall, the only indoor mall in the Cumberland area, anchors a shopping district that also includes Burton’s LaVale Shopping Center and Braddock Square, and a lot of the housing here is newer and more affordable than what you’ll find in Cumberland’s historic core. We manage rentals across that whole corridor.
An Unincorporated Community With Its Own Rental Rhythm
LaVale has never had its own town government. It’s a census-designated place inside Allegany County, first developed as a subdivision in 1909 and officially named LaVale in 1947 when the local sanitary commission was formed. That matters for owners: there’s no separate LaVale rental ordinance or municipal code to track, just Allegany County and Maryland requirements. The area built its identity around the National Road and grew into the retail center of the Cumberland area, so a good share of the rental demand here comes from people working the retail, service, and commuter jobs along that corridor.
